Sound ScienceNAFA is a public interest organization dedicated to improving the quality and sustainability of life on earth through the advancement of sound science - through environmental, transportation and energy innovations that are in balance with the planet.NAFA has focuses on independent energy and fuels scientists, researchers and inventors, small entrepreneurial alternative energy concerns, motorists and consumers. We are not funded by large corporations or government, and are free to pursue independent -- potentially "break-through" clean energy research! Dedication to Sound Science NAFA is dedicated to advancing sound science to enhance the quality of people's well being and their personal liberty. History has shown that incomplete, inadequate, or politically motivated science can have devastating consequences, which operate to deny us our freedom and our fundamental nobility. NAFA's MTBE Fight NAFA was the ONLY scientific entity to question the underlying science used by EPA to mandate methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in reformulated gasoline. NAFA presented compelling evidence that EPA's assumptions were flawed. The EPA, the nation's environmental community and industry chastised NAFA's scientific challenge of EPA's mandated MTBE gasoline additive, which was later adopted over NAFA's objections. MTBE became the premier gasoline additive of the 19 90's to early 2000's. Its usage exploded until it became the second largest bulk ever chemical produced. In 2000, NAFA's science on MTBE was finally vindicated. But, the tragic story of environmental damage resulting from EPA's arrogance and bad science, was devastating. MTBE (now a suspected carcinogen) managed to leak from underground fuel storage tanks and has apparently contaminated a large portion of America's most precious and pristine resources - her underground aquifers. See http://www.bluewaternetwork.org/reports/rep_ca_mtbe_facts.pdf http://www.lightparty.com/Economic/MTBE.html Risk of Increasing Ozone EPA's Tier II regulation reduces NOx emissions actually increases harmful ozone. Urban ozone adversely affects our nation's health and can be expected to increase substantially in the days ahead under to the EPA's regulation. Adverse health effects are directly implicated to increases in urban ozone. Increases in ground level ozone are known to contribute to increased incidences of asthma. Studies generally show a strong correlation between emergency room respiratory related visits and elevated ozone levels. The cost of respiratory related illness is huge and ozone's correlation is undisputed. Recent evidence shows an alarming and unexpected increase in asthma, particularly among children, due to increases in ozone. Communities that thought they had solved the ozone problem have unexpectedly seen its return. See Ozone Poses New Health Threat In Denver. In 1999, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) predicted under the EPA's rule that nearly every major city would see a smog increase. Table 1 prepared in 1999 by CEI (using EPA data) focused on 14 metropolitan areas likely to otherwise be borderline with respect to ozone attainment (0.124 parts per million) in 2007, when the new EPA rule would be fully phased in. CEI predicted 12 cities (Atlanta, New Orleans, Boston, St. Louis, Kansas City, Memphis, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago and Tulsa) would be pushed into non-attainment by EPA's Tier 2/sulfur. CEI's 1999 Ozone Projected Increases from Tier2/Sulfur Rule in 2007
CEI's projection was uncanny. Nearly every one of their cities or associated metropolitan areas is already (as of 2005) having ozone problems - a problem, which did not exist before the rule. Thank you EPA for creating a serious health hazard for the entire USA! Advancement of Sound Science Not Always Easy NAFA recognizes advancing sound science is not always easy. History tells us so. For example, Nicolaus Copernicus who discovered the planets orbit the sun was silenced, then vilified after his death in 1543. Giordano Bruno, who discovered that our sun was one of the many stars in the heavens was imprisoned for six years and burned alive. Galileo who confirmed Copernicus's theory and further discovered the earth itself rotated on an axis was imprisoned, tormented and forced to recant his science at the age of seventy. The institutions of government can wage war upon, and silence the practitioners of sound science, if that science is not supported by the government. A recent example of EPA retaliation for advancing sound science would be the case of Dr. David Lewis. NAFA Has A Proven Record Of Standing Up For The Environment Not Matter What The Cost. |
